It is not necessary to have a smartphone. You can register MFA on a mobile phone (non-smartphone) that can receive text messages or phone calls or register the Microsoft Authenticator app on a tablet.

While it is possible to register MFA on a landline, we discourage this option if you ever plan to access your account from more than one location. Technology Services has a supply of hardware tokens that can be used to authenticate as a second factor. Please note at this time the tokens are intended for users who do not have another portable device to register MFA, not for convenience.
